My dear friend Tracy Weinzapfel has challenged me to choose a word for 2013 and put it to canvas.

Trust is a hard concept. Well, at least it is for me. I have come to a time in my life, and my families life, that there are a lot of unknowns. The economy sucks, we have two kids that will be college age in two years, and we have one child that needs some major surgeries in that same time frame. This leads me to my 2013 word.

In the past, I have come across people in my life that have betrayed and used me. It causes me to often put up walls and not let people get to know the true me. Thankfully, I have a loving heavenly Father that I know I can TRUST with my life and my families lives. He will never leave me, never forsake me, and will always be with me on this crazy, often bumpy, journey called life.

So, as a reminder during this year of unforeseen challenges, I have chosen TRUST as my 2013 word. I may not always be able to trust the people around me, but I know that I can always TRUST God. He has a plan for me, and each member of my family. I don't need to spend the year worrying about our future. I need to just TRUST.

Very much in my happy place today

I am using the big girl easel today to start a canvas that I am doing for a Good Friday art show. Beyond giddy!! So much fun!! Using an easel you have to stand to paint with just brings tears to my eyes. Special thanks to Momma Carol. I still absolutely LOVE this beautiful gift.

Sorry, you will have to wait till Good Friday to see the final canvas. Teehee!!
(And it's not finished yet, either)

What's on your workdesk Wednesday - WOYWW #190

The last 10 days consisted of youngest missing school with flu for 3 days, me having flu for 2 days, hubby missing work with flu for 2 days, a basketball game, church, a swim meet, and 2 teacher in service days so the kids were off school for the last two days. That is too much for 10 days and 1 sentence. So today, approximately 30 minutes ago, I finally have a minute to myself. All kids have left for school and the hubby is off to work. I explain all this to clarify my desk. I am finally in the studio and started my coasters and remembered I still needed a desk photo. This is the quick shot as I work. Before everyone left, the desk looked EXACTLY like the previous WOYWW picture.

Today, my plans are to finish the dozen coasters, finish the daisy canvas, start some projects I was asked to do as a guest design team blogger, and just enjoy the peace and quiet while I hop around to all the WOYWW blogs.

Sorry so late today.
If you want to know more about WYOWW, check out Julia's post this week below:

Now, I am going to go be creative and blog hop. Hope you enjoyed my desk today.

What's on your workdesk Wednesday - WOYWW #189

WOYWW #189

Not much going on today WOYWW friends. My desk is pretty uneventful. My 11 yr old woke me up a few days ago with a raging fever. We have been dealing with the flu every since. He has missed school so far all week and I am now getting sick. Ugh.

As my post says below, I was able to get some coasters gessoed, and that is all I have done since last Wednesday. The coasters were fanned across my desk after they dried and they are still in the same spot. My canvas from last week is still without a title. I did take a few upclose pictures of the canvas to share. Enjoy!!
Daisy Canvas

Thanks so much for stopping in for my WOYWW #189. If you have no idea what I am talking about, then check out the link below. I am part of a group of people who share their desks and current projects each week. It is a lot of fun to go around visiting work spaces all around the world and see what others are doing.

Well, better go back to bed. Hopefully this flu is over soon. I hate being sick, and this Momma Bear hates having a sick baby bear.

You do what you can

As a mom, my life is sometimes crazy. Today was one of those MOM days.

My youngest woke up today with a stomach ache and fever. Yuck!! Mom to the rescue. I medicated, cleaned up puke, made honey toast, cleaned up more puke, watched the thermometer hit 102.6, medicated some more, disinfected, and hovered. It is what I do. It is the best, worst, most rewarding, and most heart wrenching job I will ever have. I LOVE IT!!

But, even when being Mom, I still have to be me. You see, someday MOM won't be needed as much. Someday, I will only be a phone call. I was somebody before I became a Mom, and I think it is important for everyone to continue to be who they really are deep down. There will come a time when Mom isn't needed as much, and I don't want to look in the mirror and not know who I am without my kids.

So today, I did all the things mentioned above, but I also made a little time for me. Thankfully, sick people nap. When he napped I gessoed. It's not a lot, but it kept me from feeling overwhelmed. I am doing a coaster swap in a few weeks. All of us are painting individual coasters and then we will exchange them to make up mini books with everyone's different artistic creations.

Here are the pictures of my gessoed coasters:

I know it's not much, but I hope something I said or did today inspired you.
Be inspired, create everyday, and find time for you in your hectic life.

Last week I was swamped and this week I wake up to a sick kiddo. I have unfinished projects, projects I need to start and now I need to play doctor.

Hope and pray everyone else is having a better start to their week.
Maybe I can at least get something gessoed.

And to all my WYOWW friends that said the glass of dirty paint water was "Just fine" in last
Wednesdays desk photo - I knocked it over yesterday when I popped in my studio for five seconds to look for something. Ugh. I think I got all the blue paint water out of the light cream carpet. Double UGH!!

WOYWW?? Do you know what that means? I do.

WOYWW #188
Hello all~
To my regular followers - do you know what WOYWW stands for?
I will be nice. I won't leave you in suspense until the end of this post.
WOYWW stands for "What's on your workdesk Wednesday?"

A dear friend Sandee, from "In The Hills of North Carolina", told me about this fabulous group that she is involved with. Each week, on Wednesday's, they take a picture of their current desk and share what they are working on. So fun!!! A great way to share more of the process instead of just the final pictures and projects. So here is my very first WOYWW post.

To all the new ladies and gentlemen who are visiting from WOYWW - Welcome!!
My name is Lori - And this is my workdesk.

It took all I had not to clean it up some and at least toss the used baby wipes and paper plate with dried paint on it. Luckily, my hubby was standing behind me and stopped me. This is going to be good for me, but hard, I am not used to sharing my MESSY process. (UGH. I just noticed there is still dirty paint water on the desk too. I really need to learn to dump that and rinse the paint brushes immediately after using them)

The current work is smack dab in the middle. It is an unfinished canvas. It is in need of a saying, quote or word, but I haven't figured out what yet. Any ideas? All I know is I want it to be stamped, written or painted in white. Come on!! We can make this a group project. Tell me how to finish it.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this stroll past my messy desk. Thanks for stopping in. Hopefully, by next week, I will have finished this project and started a new one. The next project will involve my 2013 word - TRUST.

With My Whole Heart

Ok, I have to say first and foremost, that I really don't care if you hate this Mixed Media piece. You see, I LOVE IT!!! It is me! I absolutely would not change a thing about this HUGE 16x20 canvas. And for those of you who know me very well, that is saying a lot. I am 100% my own worst critic. But this piece is perfect. I love the texture, the colors, and the meaning behind why I painted it. It is my first "Valentine" piece of the year and a gift for Brian and I, to hang in our bedroom. It says how we feel about each other now, how we have felt for the last 26 years, and how we will feel until God separates us. (Ok, enough mushy stuff!! Let's talk about the canvas)

Materials used:
~ 16x20 pre-primed canvas
~ Torn strips of muslin
~ Mod podge
~ Modeling paste
~ Dyan Reavely's Ranger Dylusions Stencil - Dotted Flowers DYS34018
~ Golden acrylics
~ Claudine Hellmuth Studio Gesso
~ Washi tape
~ Drywall tape
~ Tim Holtz Distress Ink
~ Charcoal Pencil
~ Faber Castell Big Brush Black Pitt Pen

This canvas actually started months ago. I tore the strips of muslin and glued them down and then it just sat, and sat, and sat. I knew the general idea of what I wanted to do, but I got scared. I was afraid it wouldn't turn out like it looked in my head.

Well, in 2013 I have decided to CREATE every day. And to do that, you have to just do and have no fears. Well, that meant starting with my unfinished project. So, on January 1st, I started this canvas.

Here are the steps:
1) Prime muslin strips with gesso. Dry.
2) Add modeling paste with favorite stencil. Dry.
3) Start adding favorite colors around canvas. Dry.
4) Add tapes around edges with a little mod podge and some yellow paint.
5) Add more paint. Dry.
6) Decide to add a heart right in the middle of canvas. SCARY!! Dry.
7) Add charcoal pencil around heart. Smudge.
8) Add distress ink.
9) Color in a few circles with gesso for no reason at all.
10) Write and stamp saying.
11) Add more distress ink.
12) Spray entire canvas with gloss fixative.

I would like to say, it was that easy, but that would be lying. A lot more steps of "walk away and think" should probably be added to that list. LOL

Well, like I said above, I don't really care if you like what I painted, because I do. To me, that is what true art should be - something we love so much that we don't care if someone else likes it or not.

I do hope this inspires you to go out
and create some of your own art, and I pray you LOVE IT!!!

Happy 2013!!!!!!

I pray that you all find time to create as often as possible this year. Today, is one of those rare days when I have nothing on our family calendar. Going to spend some time in my studio finishing up two paintings I started last week. Paint, stencils, and ink, oh my!!! So much fun!!!

I promise to take pictures and share when they are finished.
Hugs to all!!
